Thank you Hollywood Gaming!

For years now, Hollywood Gaming at Mahoning Valley Race Course has been a supporter of ours. We here at Veterans’ Outreach are so grateful for them and their kindness. Recently, in honor of Armed Forces Day on May 20th, they put together a “Donate & Win” to benefit Veterans’ Outreach. That means for every person that donated at least $5, they got a chance to win up to $1,500 in Free Play, however they were guaranteed at least $10 in Free Play. We are so grateful for this event! These much needed funds will go towards renovating our new building location. Once the doors open there, we will be able to serve local veterans like never before! We are so excited for this development and can’t wait. Thank you Hollywood Gaming!

It Takes Each of Us to Make a Difference for All of Us

Last week, we got the surprise we never expected! A wonderful veteran whom we helped get into an apartment a couple of years ago came in for a visit. During that timeframe we also helped him get a job. He came by to chat and tell us how good he’s doing and we could not be happier for him. He also came with a donation for Veterans’ Outreach. His way of saying thanks for all we had done for him. We are always here to help. Veterans just like him.We are grateful for the impact that we made on his life and so many others. Thank you for paying in forward sir. You remind us as to why we do what we do, every day.

SGT William Gordon Ely, Pearl Harbor Survivor and Hero, My Dad

SGT William “Bill” Gordon Ely was born in a small town in Ohio called Gallipolis. As a child starting at 8 years old, he worked on the family farm. Just 9 years later during The Depression, Bill decided to join the Army, pre-WWII. He was determined to enlist, so he lied about his age due to him only being 17 years old.

Vietnam Veteran Breathes Easier Thanks to Home Depot

A few weeks ago, I got a call from Tim who works at Home Depot in Austintown.  He said that they wanted to donate a whole house generator valued at $10K to a veteran that has conditions that make electricity mandatory for survival.  He said he had called other veteran agencies and whoever found the best candidate would get the generator.

We told them about a Vietnam veteran suffering from conditions from Agent Orange, who had to be on oxygen 24/7.  The veteran’s name is Michael.  Michael met Bob Julian, our services director, at the Home Depot in Boardman with a cargo van and Home Depot loaded the generator into his van.  Michael has a family member that is an electrician, so he got it installed for free as well.

This incredible gift from Home Depot will give this grateful veteran peace of mind when a storm rolls through or any other electrical issue. We are so grateful to have been a part of this very rewarding day. Congratulations Michael and thank you Home Depot!!

Home to Veteran Home

Recently, the homeowners of a home in Ashland, KY donated the contents of their home to help our veterans in need! Furniture, kitchenware, home good, toys and more! Our location in Kentucky is in Grayson. From there these items will be made available for veterans in need! Wonderful volunteers, whom we are so grateful for, are spending many trips collecting items from this home and bringing them back to the office. Thank you so much! We appreciate donations of all types of items! Please donate when you can, we appreciate every item!

Across State Lines

Recently at our office in Florida, we had a request for financial help from a female veteran.  This young woman was in a PTSD treatment program.  The referral for aid came by way of our Alabama sister Veterans’ Outreach headquarters.  The veteran had contacted the Alabama office as she was from that state, she was however domiciled in Florida at a PTSD treatment center and because of that, it was a Florida assistance case.  The veteran had no funds for personal care items and was badly in need of some everyday clothes. We were able to have two Walmart $100 gift cards delivered to her at the treatment center.  Upon receipt, she called to express her heartfelt thanks. We are so happy to have had such a quick solution for her!

10th ANNUAL NCAA CALCUTTA AUCTION BENEFITS VETERANS

We are so grateful to have been selected again as the beneficiary of this event! All teams were auctioned off to the highest bidder. The further a team advanced, the more cash the bidders won.

But the real winners of this event are the veterans. This donation will provide

financial assistance to dozens of veterans with their most immediate needs –

things that they can’t handle on their own. We are amazed and incredibly

grateful for the generosity of Cody Holecko, the organizer of the event. We thank

you and all the participants for supporting our mission to respectfully serve and

honor all veterans.

Camelot Lanes, Thank You!

This past weekend was our First Annual Stars and Strikes Bowling Event located at Camelot Lanes in Youngstown, Ohio. Blessed by Camelot Lanes, they donated their lanes to us for this event. We feel so honored to have such an opportunity. All proceeds from the bowling event and related fundraising efforts, including a basket raffle and 50-50 drawing, were raised purely to support our veterans in need. The event was such a fun way to interact with our local supporters and community to further our mission to make everyday Veterans’ Day at Veterans’ Outreach. Thank you to all who participated, our sponsors, and Camelot Lanes!!

VET-NET NEWSLETTER CELEBRATES 2ND ANNIVERSARY

It’s hard to believe that two years have come and gone since this newsletter became a reality. It was born from the Pandemic. The COVID-19 Pandemic was shocking, saddening, and has left all of us changed forever. The world’s progress and any comfort that we had was compromised. Almost seven million people worldwide lost their lives. On top of that incredible loss, so many businesses had to close their doors, and many are still struggling to regain their pre-COVID positions.

We thank God that Veterans’ Outreach survived and still stands ready to help veterans in their time of need. In the early days of COVID, when we were all hunkering down, we shut down our offices for about one month. I had recently hired Kathleen, a part-time assistant to help with Heroes’ Passage development, but that was halted. She asked me if she was going to be laid off – I told her to let me think about it. As I did, I realized that this shut down time was an opportunity to finally develop a goal of mine – the VetNet Newsletter.

I didn’t expect to be shut down for long, and fully expected Veterans’ Outreach to survive and go on as before. I asked her if she ever had ever developed an online newsletter?

She told me never, and I asked her if she would like to try. Lots of research and trial and error led to our first newsletter in April of 2020! She stuck with the program and has been developing and growing since then, up to approximately 8,000 subscribers and growing.

We had a big setback in August of 2022 when Kathleen suffered many injuries from a horse accident. She loved her horse and riding, but it nearly took her life. During her toughest time of recuperation, our Social Media Director and Graphic Design Specialist, Elisha, took over and kept the newsletter coming out monthly.

After a relatively short time, Kathleen showed amazing grit by pulling herself back into the “saddle” of the newsletter development. We thank Kathleen for her amazing determination.

Through this publication, we shine a positive lens on the service and sacrifice of America’s military veterans. We highlight and celebrate special dates in history. We provide an inside view into the daily activity of our service to veterans in need through the “Spotlight” stories. We keep our readers up to date on upcoming special events. I write an editorial each month that comes from my heart and I hope has touched yours.

So, anyone can receive our newsletter in their email by signing up on the website, www.veteransoutreach.org. It’s a great way to keep up with developments to enlarge and enhance our mission to help veterans. Please check us out carefully and hopefully you can find a niche for you to come on board and become a monthly sponsor.

The hard fact is that we can’t help a veteran without raising the funds to answer the plea for help.

“And the truth is that all soldiers pay with their lives. Some pay all at once, while others pay over a lifetime.” by J. M. Storm.

May God bless America and especially the veterans, our heroes!

Homeless to Home

At our corporate office in Youngstown, Ohio we had a veteran come in recently that was referred to us through another organization. We are always so happy to assist with referrals. Working together to help veterans’ lives is always our priority. This government organization was able to help her from being homeless to living in an apartment, a home to call their own. However, she was referred to us to turn that house into a home by providing her with resources for furniture. Then we were able to refer her to an agency to help her get a job. We are happy to report her home is furnished and she now has a job. Her whole life is now changed through collaboration and we are so happy for her.
