Honoring Our Flag Through Respectful Retirement

The American flag is a powerful symbol of our nation’s freedom, unity, and the sacrifices made by generations of service members. When a flag becomes worn, faded, torn, or no longer suitable for display, it should be retired in a manner that reflects the respect it has earned.

Recently, Veterans’ Outreach Caseworker Chris Derr, a U.S. Army Airborne veteran, participated in a Flag Retirement Ceremony, assisting in the dignified retirement of unserviceable American flags through ceremonial burning, a time-honored tradition recognized as one of the most respectful ways to retire the nation’s flag.

While some may be unfamiliar with the practice, the ceremonial burning of an American flag is not an act of disrespect. Instead, it is a solemn and meaningful tradition observed by veterans organizations, military units, and patriotic groups across the country. Each ceremony serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by those who have defended the freedoms the flag represents.

For Chris, participating in the ceremony was a natural extension of a lifetime dedicated to service. As a veteran and advocate for fellow veterans, he understands the deep significance the American flag holds for those who have worn the uniform and the importance of preserving traditions that honor our nation’s history.
