Happy 97th Birthday Crazy Joe

Happy 97th Birthday Crazy Joe

A Great Milestone for about anyone. Joe Lavinger, A WWII Veteran, was at the Normandy Invasion. He was helping to clear the mines in a mine sweeper called the USS Steady.

After the War, he became a comedian and had his own band for 57 years. After that career…he wanted to help the veterans in need.So he joined, Veterans’ Outreach, for 2 decades raising funds for the Mission and bringing an awareness to those vets impacted by war!

Joe raised a quarter of a million dollars…over 20 years, and his claim to fame, then was receiving donations of $100 dollar bills from passionate Americans! He has 136 of them to his credit!

He is married to Mary for 46 years and they are both from Bethlehem…which he uses in his Jokes! American Legion Post 532 in Columbus hosted the party for their eldest member. Bernie, the commander, had advertised and had lots of food, Music, and Birthday wishes for Joe, whom also was voted vet of the year last November.

Joe is an inspiration to us all. His goal is to help as many vets that he can and meet 10 strangers a day that he can make smile or laugh at one of his hilarious jokes and/or antics.

We need a lot more “Crazy” JOE’S in this world…don’t we!

Your fellow Veterans and Veterans’ Outreach, thank you for your services from the bottoms of our hearts!

Heroes’ Passage Update June 2020

Heroes’ Passage Development has been stalled, pretty much, along with the rest of America’s businesses.  The gears of our nation and its’ principals are in clutch mode.

We still are hopeful and resilient to keep the life changing dream alive for this magnificent project for our vets in need of a change in life!

One of our highlighted market studies have been doing research and collaboration on the possibility of bee farming. An initial contact that we had was with Licking River Bees, which has over 70 members, most are veterans.

The directors were genuinely interested and are hoping that this alliance will help spread nationwide the importance of BEE FARMING for our agricultural needs. We had the pleasure of conferencing with Lori Bowling, county extension agent for horticulture at the University of Kentucky.  We talked a great deal about the project and the Bee Farming Program.  She was very helpful and agreed to help on our oversight committee! She wears allot of hats and she lives to work and share with other folks her knowledge and talents.

We had another hopeful conference on the project with a gentleman named John Berry. He is a decorated Army Vet that lead as a Battalion Commander during “Iraqi Freedom”.

He is a Nebraskan trial lawyer and is involved, nationwide, with his experienced Veteran Team, in fighting for our veteran’s constitutional rights. Especially, for the disabled vets.

He arranged the meeting with us and 4 other veteran nonprofits which was very informative.

I believe that John Berry, also, will be a tremendous help to the Project, Heroes’ Passage, once the proposal starts taking shape.

If anyone would like to help, in any way…you can! Please email me at [email protected]!

 Thanks…John Ely

Our Nation Still Stands!

Our Nation Still Stands!
From Veterans’ Outreach President

Is that all you got? Yea…One punch and then a second punch to the guts of our nation. With all of the ugliness that 2020 has given to us in less than a year? What’s NEXT? The PANDEMIC and then the Floyd Riots have been one nightmare after another. The many trillions of dollars lost and over 100,000 lives lost? The property damages, businesses by the millions…forever gone? Dreams shattered and all of the carnage of everything added up? We should all have sticker shock!

Still, with the rest of the world watching in horror at what is going on in these United States, this is where we are wounded and weak and dramatically distracted. Perfect time for we Americans to fall prey to a nefarious foreign power, while we all struggle to figure out our own wokeness. (That word will be voted on The Word of the Year!) The nightmares forever have changed us! In the meantime, with all of these calamities going on around us, it is simply amazing that our Military continues to “STAND READY”. Those duties are still being attended too, while our elected and appointed leaders try to figure things out. There should be absolutely no manifestation of hate or discrimination in this world or this nation! The USA is a proud and a FREE Civilized NATION, founded upon great ideals like “liberty and justice for all”. But…that evil is still out there that feed off of sewing discord.

Recent events, images of public killings, vicious and riotous protests are terribly tragic, and we must overcome the issues that have initiated these problems. Veterans’ Outreach is proud to be “awoke” to the evil of discriminations. The hurt and the trauma that it inflicts on fellow human beings. It is true and reveals itself, that, we have lost God through these disparaging times. If we all can look at the GOOD BOOK once or again…it does preach that, “Every Man Is Created Equal”. Yes, and simply another timely message, “Thou Shalt Not Kill”!  Veterans’ Outreach has proven itself time and time again to have never displayed an iota of calculating the worth of one vet over another, because of their skin color. The fact is that most of the vets that we have helped and continue to help, are minorities. The greatest protector of all time is the American Soldier. Red, Yellow, Black, White, Republican, Democrat, and whatever the background, the American Soldier is a Universal being of ONE! They can tell you a story that when you are in that foxhole with a fellow soldier, you rarely will find a Bigot or Atheist! The lesson that should have been learned by all. It is time to wake UP!

The Mission of a Pearl Harbor Survivor’s Son!

The Mission of a Pearl Harbor Survivor’s Son!
To Tell the Story…

Through My Father: A Pearl Harbor Survivor

William Gordon Ely was my father and I am proud to be his son and share his story.  He was born in Gallipolis, Ohio where he worked on the family farm when he was just eight years old…even driving tractor! One day he was on a bicycle riding on a country road when a couple of men waived him down in their Model T! The men introduced themselves as Mr. Ford and Mr. Firestone! They were lost and asked for directions to Columbus! William (Bill) didn’t know who the men were until later. He was born with a photographic memory and recalled that they were dressed pretty nice!

Dad’s brush with history didn’t stop there.  He later fared the DEPRESSION with his family, though he lost his big brother John to a drowning accident, he joined the service at 17…lying about his age!  His path intertwined with many historical persons.

He was finally stationed at Pearl Harbor after touring the South Pacific and wrote to his Mom that he found paradise.  He even bragged about catching a forty-pound octopus and having a barbecue with the guys out on the beach!  Just before 8 AM on December 7, 1941 my Dad, Bill, was on the porch of the barracks because of an upset stomach from cucumber salad the night before, which saved his life!  The airfields were the first attacked and over 200 men were lost there. Bill was a Paramedic so he was racing off in his ambulance truck just trying to get away from the Zeros which were strafing to the left and right of him. The attack lasted a total of 90 minutes and left 2,400 dead and 1,100 wounded.

Bill tended to as many wounded as he could, while he was wounded as well. He pulled many out of the burning water, not giving much thought of his own safety. He kept that rescue up for three days driving them to the Hickam Air Field Hospital.  My Dad was told to take care of one critically wounded man with burns covering his body.   He administered blood and glucose constantly, and covered the soldiers badly burned body in petroleum jelly.

He would change his bandages round the clock and even sleep next to his fellow soldier to keep him warm so as he wouldn’t go into shock. That man’s mom later wrote a letter to my Dad thanking him for saving her son’s life after he made it home to further his recovery. The letter was shown to the Red Cross and they started a Blood Drive using that letter to gain public support.

My Dad went on to be a founder of the “Pearl Harbor Survivors” Columbus Chapter, and co-founder of eight other chapters.  He left in his will a major donation to the MOTT’S Military Museum of Columbus, Ohio to help with the expansion of the new wing where his Pearl Harbor Coat and Memorabilia are on display. Finally, in his last years, he was constantly petitioning the state of Ohio to rename a portion of Highway 75 to the “Pearl Harbor Memorial Highway” and he made it official in 2004! There wasn’t a day go by that he would let folks forget about that day that changed the world forever!  My Dad, William Gordon Ely, lived his life serving and honoring his country and his fellow man.

You know, he is still serving, through me, John Oliver Ely!

“Lest We Forget”! Dad… you are part of HISTORY!

Patriot Brotherhood’s mission is to…

support and defend the Constitution of the United States of America, our military veterans and first responders.

raise awareness to the sacrifices they’ve made and assist them in hardships resulting from their service.

open our brotherhood to like-minded warfighters and patriots who share our beliefs to strengthen our community.

We are the three percent, and we are everywhere. Expect us.

The Patriot Brotherhood Rides for Veterans’ Outreach

The Clubhouse Brewing Company hosted another fund raiser for Veterans’ Outreach with the group called PBMC Tomahawks.

They go proudly by the Patriot Brotherhood…which is only 3 Percent Motorcycle Club.

The rest is RED, White, and Blue! Their goal is to strengthen communities nationwide by reminding them of our solemn duty to honor and respect veterans and first responders of this country.

We visited with them, they couldn’t be more supportive of our mission “to honor and serve” all veterans.  After that event, we now have more volunteers available.

We are looking forward to what we can do together, through the rest of the year and looking forward to their 2nd Poker Run!

Thanks PATRIOTS!
