Alabama Regional Director Retires from Veterans’ Outreach (Navy Veteran Served at Bay of Pigs)

Bob Wheeler, Veterans’ Outreach’s Regional Manager of Alabama, has been a great friend and advocate for veterans in the state of Alabama.  He truly has been a “beacon of hope” for thousands of veterans in their time of need.

He started with the mission out of Columbus, Ohio in 2002 when he retired from a management career.  Columbus, Ohio is his birthplace, January 9th in 1937.  When he and his wife, Carol, decided to move closer to family in Alabama, he offered to develop the state by opening a full-service office to offer assistance to veterans.

Bob has been passionate and worked tirelessly to help veterans in need.  He found a good location in Decatur for our first office in Alabama and wasted no time in getting the mission in operation.  His wife, Carol, came on board to manage the office.  Carol had been very quiet in early meetings with Veterans’ Outreach, but after she got involved, she has become the heartbeat of that office.   She has even visited homeless veterans living under bridges in an effort to lend a helping hand.

After a few years of getting established, Bob said that he was tired of paying rent and was going to find a building to purchase for the permanent home of Veterans’ Outreach in Alabama.  Bob has proven himself to Veterans’ Outreach many times and this wasn’t any different.  He found a great location with a couple of acres in Hartselle Alabama.

While Bob was at home one evening, he suffered a bad heart attack.  He had to have a quadruple by-pass.  Before the operation, John Ely visited him from the corporate office.   John was pleased that Bob was in good spirits and anxious to get “fixed up” and get back to work. John could tell that Bob was on some strong relaxers for he was strangely laughing out loud at silly things!

So, he took the opportunity to ask Bob a question that he had asked several times before and Bob’s answer was always “If I tell ya’, I will have to kill ya’!”   With the passage of time, even military operations get declassified, and John took the chance during that hospital visit to ask him that question again.

“Well Bob, I can’t remember what you did while you were in the military?” Bob looked up at the ceiling and said that he was in the Navy, on the USS Sampson, in the Intelligence Division.  Have you heard of the “Bay of Pigs?”  He said that he figured it was all declassified since it had been more than fifty years ago.

John said that he had of course heard of the Bay of Pigs and the Cuban Missile Crisis.  Bob explained that he was on the Sampson during the blockade and was on a secret mission to topple Castro’s regime. They had trained Cuban exiles in Guerilla warfare.  Bob lifted his eyes and shook his head, he said it didn’t go well, those men were either killed or captured.  The mission was a huge failure that took just two days to unfold.

That was a long time ago, Bob has spent his life living, loving, and caring for others.  His service as a young man made that unbreakable connection to the men and women that serve so selflessly in the United States Armed Forces.

At the age of 85, his work has come full circle, and he must retire due to health concerns.

Carol has picked up the reins and will continue to help Alabama’s veterans.

We honor Robert Wheeler with this Freedom and Service Award; and we thank him for his unselfish dedication to the mission of helping veterans in need.

May God Bless Robert Wheeler!

Our Military Are The Gatekeepers

Wow…Just imagine the chaos that would ensue on this planet of ours. Evil is everywhere and it wants to control us and take away our true being, ourselves, our very essence of whom we are.

Our military and their transitioning back to being normal…well…a great deal of them are back never to normal…like before their visit to war.

To HELL AND BACK AND THAT IS NOT JUST SHORT OF THAT GATE TO HELL…BUT BEYOND!

I saw that gate and beyond through my father, brother, son, son-in-law, and Great Uncle’s eyes, stories, and their own physical and mental injuries. The terror and determination that they had was very ethereal.

It was hard to imagine, for me, to still comprehend their visit to the other side!

That covers, WWI, WWII (Pearl Harbor), Korea, Vietnam, and finally Afghanistan. They all had lifelong agonies!

The blood and minds that is taken by that Devil…That Evil…is apparent and a constant reminder all around us in the form of those surviving veterans.

They were there at and beyond that GATE! They are to keep that EVIL from escaping. Its desire to be soul harvesting worldwide is the most dangerous of all plagues!

The planning by those DEMONS is in full swing to unleash and foment on all people of the world, that is the goal!

Our American Soldiers have been successful so far but keeping that Devil behind that GATE, will always be the task of our service men and women.

Our family, friends, and strangers sign up to be those “Angels of Democracy”, which we will always be grateful for that American Spirit that is righteous in their promise to protect and serve!

I would like to say even more clear, than I humanly can, that we love you, stand by you, and are very grateful to all our veterans, and those still serving for our strong FREEDOMS, that we enjoy. Keeping that DEVIL behind that Gate is no easy task!

May you all have a wonderful New Year that will show you new and meaningful beginnings! To all of those fellow Americans I would like to ask that you extend a Hearty thank you to those men and women, our protectors!

God Bless Each and Every ONE That Has Served!

I am an American, and I thank God and our veterans every day for that privilege!  Veterans’ Outreach wishes all veterans a blessed and inspirational Christmas season. This time of year is especially important to me, for I am A Pearl Harbor Survivor’s Son!

This year, December 7, 2021, is the 80th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor.  In current day, we are into the Christmas season.  Try and imagine what the Christmas season was like in 1941, after the terrible attack on Pearl Harbor.  My father was a paramedic stationed at Hickam Field, where that dreadful morning of bombings took place. He nearly lost his life, while standing on the porch of his barracks.

What ensued could only be referred to as hell-on-earth!  He was injured during that attack but was able to help other soldiers get to the new hospital at Hickam Field. The wounded would have to be laid outside of the hospital for it filled up fast.

Many men were rescued from the burning water by my father. He bravely jumped into the oil slicked water time and time again to save lives for three days straight. He struggled with the impacts of war to his last breath.  He spent much of his life preserving the history of the attack. He was my Hero!

My uncle, father, brother, son, son-in-law, and those that serve and have served – I thank all of them for what they have done in their service to our country. My brother, a Korean/Vietnam Veteran, passed this past July.  This Christmas will be the first one that I will not have him. That is especially difficult for me and family.

Much of my life has been dedicated to helping veterans.  The charity that I founded, Veterans’ Outreach, had the profound blessing of having 110 acres donated by a lifelong patriot of Kentucky. His wish is that we help veterans.  So, we developed a plan to do just that – Heroes’ Passage: A Retreat for Veterans” is the projects name.  It is a monumental undertaking, and it will take big sponsors to get it off the ground.  We are seeking funding to get past the planning stage.  We are seeking a Christmas Miracle, and it can happen. $100, $1000, $10,000, or more at a time, until we reach the magic number to break ground.

Check out our site, veteransoutreach.org for the description of the project and conceptual.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! God Bless our Nation and God Bless our Military.

Vienna VFW Post 3521 Helps Local Veterans

On a normal busy day at Veterans’ Outreach, we have a lot of visitors – most come here to get help.  But we had some surprise visitors that were here to give help.

Two members from the Vienna VFW Post 3521 stopped by to donate turkeys and beautiful hand decorated tote bags to carry them home.  This club and their members wanted to make sure that every veteran will have a turkey for the Thanksgiving feast coming up in a few days.  We are grateful for the opportunity to be a conduit for veterans to help other veterans. The Vienna VFW Post 3521 is open for new members.  Check out their Facebook page or give them a call at 330-539-5481.

Veterans’ Outreach Hosts Warming Event

Veterans’ Outreach had the privilege to host the Youngstown Bluecoats a few days ago to present an event that distributed warming items to veterans.  Many veterans came out for the opportunity to get ready for the cold weather ahead.  The Bluecoats bus was fully stocked and offered new boots, socks, coats, hats, gloves and scarves to veterans in need.  Veterans’ Outreach had bags of non-perishable foods ready to go as well.  Local press visited and presented glowing articles in our local papers.  We are humbled by the service and sacrifice that veterans make every day.  We are honored to serve.

Home Free – A Dream Becomes a Reality

“Home Free – A Tribute to the American Veteran” is a great dedication to all veterans and to what we were given in these United states of America by their sacrifices. This compilation of patriotic songs was written and performed by true freedom loving artists dedicated to the message of thanks and heartfelt respect to all veterans. The songs create a patriotic salute to the soldiers who have preserved our freedoms.

Veterans’ Outreach charity is 27 years old, I had the idea 21 years ago of developing a collection of songs that could help with fundraising and stir up patriotism.

I advertised for musical artists to send me auditions of their favorite patriotic tunes. I got a wide variety such as an elementary school bands’ rendition of “Oh Beautiful”, and “The Star-Spangled Banner” played in a bathroom by way of a tuba! Well, that was getting me nowhere, fast. So, I figured to try Nashville in a magazine called “Music Row”.  I received over 200 auditions…I was ecstatic.  I was getting offerings from well-known artists like Alabama, Oak Ridge Boys, Lee Greenwood, Kenny Rogers, and the like.

One artist Rick Lance, who is a veteran, took a particular interest in the campaign when he offered his song “Sarge”. It’s a fantastic tribute to veterans.  Rick brought allot to the table, everything we needed to get the job done!  Rick is a professional photographer with a design background.  He contacted other artists and coordinated deals. He offered, on our behalf, a thousand dollars paid to the artist/song writer for each song used for the collection of music.

Most of the artists donated their creation for the patriotic music collection. Things were moving along well. We came up with the name “American Pride”.  The art was being done for that title then suddenly, our world was rocked by the events of 9/11.  After a while, Rick pointed out that our chosen title was being used by many other markets and we would look like copycats. So, he thought the title should change to something like, “Home Free: A Tribute to the American Veteran”.

Bob Corbin, one of the artists jumped in to help finish the music collection! Bob Corbin is a song writer and vocalist in his group, “The Corbin Hanner Band”, from Pittsburgh. Their song contribution was, “Son of America”! I met with Corbin Hanner and Corbin jumped in with both feet plus he managed a group that toured with Kenny Rogers, “The Chandler Sisters”.  The first identical triplets that I ever saw! I wasn’t having double takes, but triple takes?  I remember looking at their hands and tried to remember their names by seeing what jewelry they were wearing.

The studio was “The Sound Emporium” which was used by most every major artist and many movie scores. What an experience! The title song, “Home Free, was sung by platinum artist, T. Graham Brown. I remember watching T running into the studio and he walked past me, then he backed up and looked me square in the eye and asked, “Is this for the veterans?” I said, “Yes sir, T, it is! “He hurriedly replied, “Well that is why I am here, to help our vets!”

Several of the other well-known artists were contracted by Universal and we would have to use their duplication services to get access to those artists. Our patriotic music collection had twenty songs on it, but we had to scale it down due to the cost of production. So, we had to reboot and scale down to thirteen artists.

It turned out to be one of the most patriotic collaborations of all time. The songs are timeless and do indeed swell up our American spirit of freedom and love of God, family, and country.  Take a minute to check out and listen to the sound of Patriotism and what it means to all Americans.  If you listen closely, you may even have to fight back a tear or two.

Perseverance Fulfills Veterans’ Final Request

A veteran passed away in October, 2020.  He was cremated as requested.  However, due to a fire in the National Archives in 1978, his final wish to be buried at the local Veterans Cemetery was denied.

His family came to Veterans’ Outreach for help.

After a year of “due process” and working with local and national groups, and Senator Paul Rand, his final wishes are finally to be realized.

Through Hell and Back

It seems we all have something to whine and moan and complain about! August 30th, January 6th, Floyd, the southern border crisis, COVID-19 and the variants, defunding the police, taxes, gas prices, our environment, and food prices, and so many more things that we are surviving.

But, we are still here, “one nation under GOD, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all”. As long as we breathe, albeit, sometimes erratically, we can do something about it.

I love our America, our military, and the blessings that we do have and share. Some have it rougher than others, remember to “count your blessings”. The richness of our compassion and our love of having the opportunity to be all that you can be, is here, more than anywhere else. It is truly our treasure. We don’t see thousands of people trying to out of our country, do we?

My duty in life is to help as many veterans as possible that are especially war impacted.

I recently had an eye-opening Zoom meeting with a group called The Veterans Alliance which is comprised of 240 nonprofit organizations that provide support for veterans nationwide.

The September meeting had a distinguished soldier guest named Shilo Harris. His story is truly inspirational. He was serving in Iraq and was nearly killed after he was blown up by 700 lbs of an IED explosive, while he was riding in his Humvee.

Three of his buddies were killed, but, his driver and he survived. He had severe burns over 35% of his body. Ears incinerated, his nose, fingers, and the majority of his skin on his head/face, etc., were gone.

He suffered in a coma for 48 days before he finally woke up. He thought that he could just get up and walk out of the hospital. When he realized what had happened, he was deeply depressed.   His loving father came in with a brave face, and asked his burned-up son, “What are you going to do soldier!  What are you going to do now, SOLDIER!

That is when he knew that he had to start moving or he would become and stay in a state of hopelessness. Years of therapy and 76 operations later, he now shares his story, his trials and successes to encourage other soldiers that are still lost in the dark.

Please watch the links that I have attached and look to picking up his book, The STEEL WILL!

American Legion Post 472 “Saddle Up for Soldiers” Poker Run

Once again, the members and friends from American Legion Post 472 hosted a Poker Run to benefit Veterans’ Outreach programs for veterans.  Their selfless work and dedication are humbling and energizing at the same time.  We were invited to a check presentation and were overwhelmed with their generous support of our mission to honor and serve all veterans.  They raised nearly $4,000 for local veterans.  They not only provided monetary support but praised our work and offered help at any time.  We were greatly honored by this very patriotic American Legion and its members.  This donation will enable us to help many veterans with problems that are unique and often critical.  With this help, veterans can go about their daily business of living and moving forward with a better life.

Thank you, American Legion Post 472 from all the veterans that will benefit from your event.
